Fire Department Service & Supply is a company that was started in August of 1973 as a part-time business by 2 volunteer fire fighters, named Al Sutt and Jim Trautwein. Al & Jim were worried about the lack of concern for the volunteer fire departments, and decided to provide an outlet which would allow them to offer the most practical products for every fire department to use, at a reasonable price. Both men served as Fire Chief of the McMahan Volunteer Fire Department, Jim Trautwein in 1970 & 1971; Al Sutt in 1972, and with their fire service background, they were easily able to undertand the problems that Fire Chiefs and Fire Departments had.
In the beginning, the company represented 30-40 vendors but had no warehouse or inventory. They sold a variety of products and attended conventions, including the 1973 International Association of Fire Chiefs annual convention, which was held in Baltimore, MD. Here they began negotiations that led to the sale of their very first "mini-pumper", to the municipal fire department in Jennings, LA.
In 1992, the company suffered the loss of Jim Trautwein, who passed away after an illness. In 2006, after 36 years of service, Al Sutt decided to retire from the company. Today, Jim's wife Linda and their son Jay continue the tradition of proudly serving the Firefighters of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, by providing quality products at reasonable prices for all fire departments, regardless of their status of being a fully paid or volunteer department. We offer a wide range of products, from safety goggles to fire apparatus. We are also happy to announce the addition of a mobile repair unit, which is able to come to your facility and make repairs to SCBA or cylinders, conduct annual Posi-check testing, and calibration of gas meters. If you feel that our company can be of service to your department, please don't hesitate to contact us!
